  • The award looks like a peepal leaf with “Bharat Ratna” printed on it in the Devanagari script. Sun’s image is also printed on it. The flip side of the award bears the motto and the state emblem

 

  • Bharat Ratna Award was started by Dr. Rajendra Prasad on January 2, 1954. At that time only the people who were alive were entitled this award for their national service. Soon after, these norms were altered

  • The 1st person to be given Bharat Ratna was scientist C.V. Raman and the 1st person to get Bharat Ratna posthumously is Lal Bahadur Shashtri

 

  • Vallabhbhai Patel is the eldest person to be given the award after death, at age 116 and Gulzarilal Nanda is the eldest alive person to receive the award at age of 99

 

  • Subhas Chandra Bose was honored with Bharat Ratna posthumously in the year 1992. But due to certain controversy the award was withdrawn
