The name comes from the Indonesian word merandang or randang, which means "slowly", referring to the long cooking process. The dish was likely influenced by a variety of culinary influences, such as Indian, Islam and the Portuguese.”

Today, rendang is recognised as one of Indonesia's most iconic dishes and has gained international acclaim. Its popularity can be attributed to its unique flavor profile, cultural significance, and versatility. Rendang has also featured in numerous culinary competitions.

What is the Significance of Rendang?

In Indonesian culture, rendang is very important. It is frequently offered during festive events, including religious rituals, weddings, and festivals.
