International Day of Radiology event is organised by the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT). Let us tell you that X-rays were discovered by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.

This day raises awareness about radiology, the way it contributes to safe and patient care and understanding the crucial role that radiologists and radiological technologists play in healthcare. X-rays, MRI scans, ultrasounds, etc. technologies help in finding health-related problems by providing an eye-catching image.

International Day of Radiology 2019: Theme

The theme of International Radiology Day 2019 is "Sports Imaging".

The theme of 2019 focuses on the essential role that imaging professionals play in the detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of sports-related injuries, increases the quality of care and treatment of patients. International Day of Radiology (IDOR) celebration is a week-long celebration as National Radiologic Technology Week from 3 November to 9 November 2019.

In 2018, the theme was "Cardiac Imaging".

In 2017, the theme was "Emergency Radiology".

In 2016, the theme was "Breast Imaging".

World Radiography Day is observed on 8 November since 2007, to mark the date of the discovery of Roentgen's discovery of X-radiation. In fact, International Radiology Day is also followed by the World Radiography Day. It is also celebrated on 8 November.

The European Society of Radiology (ESR) in 2011 resolved that there should be a celebration regarding radiology annually to mark the discovery of X-Radiation done by Roentgen on 8 November, 1895.

Together ESR and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) decided to observe the International Day of Radiology on 8 November and the first time it was celebrated in 2012.

Let us tell you that in the first year of the International Radiology Day celebration around 80 radiology societies from across the globe were involved.

Note: To celebrate International Radiology Day is a decision of the joint enterprise of the ESR, RSNA and ACR and the International Society of Radiology (ISR), as well as umbrella organisations on all continents including the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology (AOSR), the Colegio Interamericano de Radiologia (CIR), the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR), and the Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA).

And the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS) also actively backs and promotes the International Day of Radiology.

Radiologists are specialised with the techniques in diagnosing and treating disease and injury by using medical imaging techniques like X-rays, CT, MRI, ultrasound, etc. It is necessary to have knowledge about the imaging techniques that include the use of radiation and also require training to understand radiation safety and protection.

To become a radiologist it is essential to pursue graduation from an accredited medical school, have to pass a licensing examination and have to complete at least four years of unique postgraduate medical education in topics as mentioned below:

- Radiation safety/protection

- Radiation effects on the human body

- Appropriate performance and interpretation of quality radiology and medical imaging examinations.

Some facts about X-Rays

- A German professor named Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895 accidentally discovered X-rays.

- During his experiment regarding X-rays, he noticed that crystals were giving fluorescent glow when placed near a high-voltage cathode-ray tube- even when he shielded them with dark paper. Some form of energy was produced by the tube that penetrates the paper and causes the crystals to glow. In his later experiments, he showed that this radiation could penetrate the soft tissues but not the bones and would produce shadow images on photographic plates.

- In 1901, Wilhelm Roentgen received the first Nobel Prize in Physics.

- Do you know that the X letter in X-rays stands for unknown, just like x stands for an unknown quantity in mathematics?

- Earlier, people thought that x-rays do not harm they are like normal light. But, it was not like that. Thomas Edison's assistant Clarence Dally worked extensively with X-rays and died due to skin cancer in 1904. Since then people started taking health concerns about the new technology seriously.

Therefore, International Day of Radiology and World Radiography Day both are observed on 8 November to mark the anniversary of the discovery of X-radiation by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.
