The Gupta Kings well known for their adoption of pompous titles. Kingship was hereditary but royal power was limited by the absence of primogeniture which means throne did not always go to the eldest son. The Guptas made munificent gifts to the brahamans, who expressed their gratitude by comparing the king to different gods and also by giving different titles.
