Magh Bihu, also referred to as Bhogali Bihu or Maghor Bihu is the most vibrant harvest festival celebrated in Assam and other northeastern states of India. The main festival will take place on 15 January in the year 2025, and the significant Sankranti moment will fall at 9:03 AM on January 14. This festival also marks the conclusion of the harvest season and represents a time to come together in communities to share meals and celebrate their agricultural heritage.
Historical Significance
The origins of Magh Bihu may be traced as far back as 3500 BC and relate to the primitive agricultural practice celebrated in recognition of the harvest closing and the inauguration of a cycle of growth. This is said to be the brainchild of the indigenous tribe Dimasa Kacharis who is regarded to be the pioneering celebrator. Bihu comes from the words Bishu and Bhog. Bihis are feast times, reminding everyone to try for peace on these days- a time one was forbidden to eat.
Magh Bihu is not an agricultural festival, but it does hold deep socio-cultural importance. It is an expression of gratitude for a great harvest and social bonding through collective experiences and culture. The festival reminds people of the toil put in by farmers throughout the year and becomes a source of happiness and introspection.
