Nitish Kumar is a senior Indian politician. He is the Chief Minister of Bihar since 2005. He is the member of Janata Dal (United) Party & has also served as the Union Minister of India.

Family Details

Nitish Kumar hails from Kurmi family. His father’s name was Shri Ram Lakhan Singh. His father worked in ayurvedic medicine & he was a well - known figure in the area. His mother’s name was Smt. Parmeshwari Devi. The ancestral home of Nitish Kumar is in Kalyanbigha village, which is adjoining Bakhtiyarpur. He was married Smt. Manju Sinha. She wife died in 2007. They have a son Nishant.

Career

Nitish Kumar did his schooling in Bakhtiyarpur village from Ganesh High School. He was very intelligent student. Thereafter he studied in Patna Science College. Then, he completed a degree course in electrical engineering from NIT Patna. Before joining politics he worked with Bihar State Electricity Board.

1977: Nitish kumar he contested for the 1st time in assembly elections as the member of Janata Party

1985 – 1989: He was elected as the member of Legislative Assembly of Bihar

1987 – 1988: He became the President of Lok Dal in Bihar

1987 – 1989: Nitish Kumar was the member of Committee on Public Undertakings in Bihar Legislative Assembly

1989: He became the Secretary General in Bihar Janata dal

1989: Nitish Kumar was elected as the member of ninth Lok Sabha for the 1st time

1991: Nitish Kumar was elected as the member of ninth Lok Sabha for the 2nd time

1991 – 1993: Nitish Kumar was the General Secretary of Janata Dal.

1991 – 1996: He was the member of Committee on Railway Convention

1993 – 1996: Nitish Kumar was the Chairman of Committee on Agriculture

1996: He was elected for the 3rd time as a member of the eleventh Lok Sabha

1998: He was elected for the 4th time as part of twelfth Lok Sabha.

1998 – 1999: Nitish Kumar was the Union Cabinet Minister of Railways

1999 – 2000: Nitish Kumar was the Union Cabinet Minister for Agriculture

2000: Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister of Bihar

2000 – 2001: Nitish Kumar was the Union Cabinet Minister for Agriculture

2005 – 2010: Nitish Kumar was the Chief Minister of the state of Bihar

2010 to date: Nitish Kumar is the Chief Minister of Bihar
