Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was born on 6 July, 1901. He was the youngest ever Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University and Independent India's first Minister of Industry and Supply. No doubt, he set an example of great leadership.
Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee: Early Life
He was born in a Bengali family in Calcutta. His mother name was Jogmaya Devi and father's name Ashutosh Mookerjee. His father was a judge of the High Court at Fort William and also served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. In 1917, he passed his Matriculation examination from Mitra Institution, Bhawanipore. In 1921, he passed B.A from the Presidency College, Calcutta with first class division in English honours. Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee’s father wants him to pursue his education in the vernacular language. He took Bengali Language and Literature from Calcutta University. He completed his M.A in 1923.

At the age of 23 after his father's death, he was elected as the Fellow of the Calcutta University. With the sudden death of his father, he was appointed as the member of the Syndicate of the Calcutta University. He made the University his own with full minded devotion for more than two decades.
In 1926, he went to England to study for the Bar and joined Lincoln's Inn. At the conference of Universities of the British Empire, he represents Calcutta University.
In 1927, he joined the legal profession first as a lawyer and then as a member of the English Bar. He was interested in politics that practicing law as he wanted to do something for his country.
In 1929, he joined the Bengali Legislative Council as a Congress candidate representing Calcutta University. Next year only he resigned from the Council but was re-elected as an independent candidate.
In 1933, his wife Sudha Devi died leaving four children two sons and two daughters. His sister-in-law Tara Debi brought them up along with her children.
He was appointed as a Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta in 1934. He remains in this post till 1938. Do you know at the age of 33 he became the youngest ever Vice Chancellor of the University but all this never deterred him for doing and serving for the people that he wants.

From November 1941 to December 1942, he joined the Progressive Coalition Ministry which was headed by Fazhul Haq as a Finance Minister of Bengal. At that time the Krishak Praja Party was in Power. Further, he quit soon and became a spokesperson for the Hindus and joined Hindu Mahasabha.
When India became independent, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Minister for Industry and Supply in the interim Central Government. He was against the Nehru-Liaquat Ali Pact and so he resigned from the cabinet in 1950. After giving his resignation to the Indian National Congress, he discussed with the Golwalker of the Rasjtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and formed Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) on 21 October, 1951. He became its first President. The ideology of BJS is very similar or close to the RSS.

According to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, a single country can't have two constitutions, two Prime Ministers and two flags.
To protect against the special status given to J&K he tried to enter Kashmir without talking permission and was arrested. During detention, he died in mysterious circumstances.

He established Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) in 1951 with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Till 1977, the party existed and later it was merged with several other parties to form Janata Party. In 1980, Janata Party government fall and then Bharatiya Jana Sangh established a new party named as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 6 April, 1980. His contribution in the creation of West Bengal in 1947 was tremendous. He framed first Indian Policy of the new Government after independence.
