Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei was born in 1939 in Mashhad, a city in northern Iran. He was one of the child among 8 children in his family, and his father was a religious scholar. At the age of 23, while studying religion, he became a part of Khomeini’s revolutionary movements. Apart from his study, he was also a secular opposition intellectual and enjoyed music, poetry, and reading. During the Third Worldism, he was influenced by the ideology of the rejection of the global capitalist also and aimed to unite the countries that did not support this capitalist economy. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was revolutionised with ideals of azadi, esteghlal and jomhuri-ye Islami. He played an important role during the 1979 revolution, and later he became the second supreme leader of Iran as President from 1981 to 1989. During this time, he led the country through the Iran-Iraq War.
