The decision

A committee comprising of animal welfare groups and experts provided their report in response to an order by the Delhi High Court. The Delhi High Court had banned a few dog breeds to be reared as pets in the country. The Delhi High Court had urged the Union of India to bring about a unanimous call on the matter, post having a discussion with other stakeholders in a time duration of three months.

These 23 dog breeds have been termed as "dangerous".  This classification blames these dogs for various attacks. The decision is taken to move towards responsible pet ownership in India.

Have there been such decisions before as well?

Yes. A decision like this is not new. Earlier too, a few pet dog breeds have been banned many countries, and India's decision is not new. For example, the dog breed "Pit Bull" are actually banned in a total of 20 states in the United States.

 Dog attack cases in India

Several dog attack cases have been reported in the country in the recent past. For instance, the state of Maharashtra reported the maximum frequency of dog attack cases in the country in the year 2023. This data has been released by the Union ministry of health and family welfare. In the last year, more than 4.35 lakh dog bite cases have been reported in the state of Maharashtra. This means there have been 1,192 cases of dog bites every day in the state, as per the data.

The number of dog bite cases in other states, like the state of Tamil Nadu is no less. The state of Tamil Nadu reported 4,04,488 dog bite cases. The next in the list is Gujarat, followed by Bihar, UP, and the state of Karnataka.

The data also points out to the fact that there has been an increase in the dog bite cases in the year 2023 by over 11.32 percent, as compared to the year 2022.

Most of the dog bite cases in the state of Maharashtra have been reported from Pune, Thane, and Mumbai. The data indicates that bad implementation of sterilization has resulted in an unchecked rise in the breeding of dogs.
