The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation is one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations System. It was formed as independent body in 1966 but converted as UN’s specialized agency in 1985 to promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental.

The Lima Declaration of 2013 mandates the mission of the organisation i.e. to promote and induce inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) to achieve shared prosperity and environmental sustainability all over the world. Hence, the organisational functions is moving around the interrelated thematic domain:

1. Poverty reduction through productive activities

2. Trade capacity-building

3. Energy and environment

All the above three thematic domain can be achieve through improving the quality of life of the world's poor by drawing on its combined global resources and expertise.

Policy-making organs of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation

There are four policy-making organs of the organisation - the General Conference, the Industrial Development Board (IDB) and the Programme and Budget Committee (PBC) which explained below:

General Conference: It is an apex body that consists of all the member States of the organisation which meets every two years and approves the programme and budgets. It establishes the scale assessments for regular budget expenditures for the forthcoming biennium and, every second time, appoints the Director-General for a period of four years.

Industrial Development Board (IDB): It acts as a preparatory body for the Conference and reviews the implementation of the approved programme of work and of the corresponding regular and operational budgets for the forthcoming biennium. It meets once during Conference year and twice during non-conference year.

Programme and Budget Committee (PBC): It is a body that estimates the proposal of the organisation and consists of 27 Member States of the Organization.

Secretariat: It is based in Vienna (Austria) and maintains representative offices in Brussels (Belgium), Geneva (Switzerland) and New York City (USA). It is assigned with the all secretarial job related to the programme and proposal of the organisation.
