DIGIPIN, a new digital address system, has been introduced by the Indian government. The initiative is launched in order to attempt to make it possible to pinpoint specific places within the nation.
It is anticipated that DIGIPIN will simplify last-mile delivery for e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart. Since DIGIPIN promises to provide a degree of geographic accuracy that has been absent in India thus far, it may also help the police, ambulance, and fire departments improve their emergency response times.
New Initiative Launched by India Post
"The DIGIPIN will facilitate safe and effective communication between the public and business sectors." The government stated in a press statement that the digital address system is grid-based, geo-coded, open-source, and interoperable.
“DIGIPIN simplifies address management by providing precise location-based identification, especially in areas with unstructured or changing addresses. It also helps in areas where no clear address exists, such as rural regions, forests, and oceans,” India Post stated in a post on microblogging site X.
Here are some things you should know about the unique digital ID and how to create a DIGIPIN for your home as the government rolls it out countrywide.
What is DIGIPIN?
DIGIPIN is a special ten-character alphanumeric code that can be created for any about 4-by-4-square-meter property located on Indian soil. This implies that distinct DIGIPINs can be created for almost any kind of property, including those in rural and urban areas, as well as various maritime zones. For example, the Jagran New Media office building in Noida, for instance, has the DIGIPIN 39J-5JP-7J8L.
The Department of Posts created DIGIPIN's foundational technology in partnership with the National Remote Sensing Center, which operates under the guidance of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad.
How Accurate is DIGIPIN?
The government has pointed out that DIGIPIN is an interoperable, open-source solution that prioritizes privacy and security. Since each DIGIPIN is encoded with the property's geographic coordinates, no personal data is stored there.
According to India Post, the devices used to record the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) position may determine how accurate the DIGIPIN is.
