WhatsApp, the very popular messaging platform, has been a choice for millions. However, making a call on the platform is an uphill battle. Currently, making a WhatsApp call to someone not on your contact list involves saving their number, making the call, and then potentially deleting the contact later. This can be inconvenient, especially for one-time conversations or calls to businesses.

That is why, to improve user-experience, the company is currently working on a new in-app dialer feature that will allow users to make WhatsApp calls without saving a number.

The feature was noticed by WABetaInfo and it mentions, “WhatsApp is exploring a new feature to provide users with an in-app dialer, set for release in a future update. It is still unclear how WhatsApp intends to implement this feature, but a dialer within WhatsApp would offer the convenience of calling contacts without the need to save their phone numbers in the address book.”

What are the Benefits of the In-App Dialer Feature?

The in-app dialer offers several advantages:

  • Convenience: Simplifies calling for one-time conversations or reaching out to businesses. No more switching between apps to find a number or going through the hassle of saving and deleting temporary contacts. With the in-app dialer, you can seamlessly initiate a call directly within WhatsApp, saving time and effort.
  • Privacy: Eliminates the need to save temporary contacts, protecting your phone's address book from clutter. This can be especially beneficial for users who are cautious about sharing their contact information or who frequently interact with people they may not need to connect with again. The in-app dialer allows you to keep your contact list organised and maintain control over your privacy.
  • Efficiency: Saves time compared to the current method of saving, calling, and then deleting contacts. With the in-app dialer, you can skip unnecessary steps and get straight to the conversation. This is particularly useful for situations where you need to make a quick call or don't want to be bothered with managing temporary contacts.

WABetaInfo mentions, “In our opinion, a dialer feature might bring several advantages to the user experience, as it would enable users to make voice calls without switching to the default stock dialer app. Calls made through WhatsApp use Internet data instead of traditional cellular networks, making them more cost-effective, especially for international calls.”

“This is a major advantage for users who have access to Wi-Fi or low-cost data plans. It is worth noting that WhatsApp is known for its end-to-end encryption, which also extends to voice calls and video calls. We believe that having a dialer feature within the app could provide users with added privacy and security compared to traditional phone calls,” it adds.

The company is also reportedly working on a feature that lets you chat with people you don't have saved in your contacts. This makes it easier to start conversations with new people without cluttering up your contact list.

What is the Availability of In-App Dialer Feature?

While the feature is in development and not yet available to the public, it indicates WhatsApp's focus on improving the user experience for calls. It's unclear when the in-app dialer will be rolled out for all users or if similar functionality will be introduced for video calls.
