Meta-owned popular messaging platform, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that gives users the ability to fast forward and rewind videos within the app.

This update brings WhatsApp's video playback experience in line with other popular messaging platforms like YouTube.

This feature was reported by WABetaInfo which is a reliable source for all the WhatsApp updates and it mentions: “WhatsApp has just submitted a new stable update for iOS, available on the App Store: the build number is 24.6.77. What’s new in this update? WhatsApp is widely rolling out a feature to forward and rewind videos to everyone!”

Recently, the platform announced a new feature that allows users to pin three messages in a conversation which makes it easier to spot the important messages.

Now, the platform is working to improve user-experience with this new forward and rewind feature.

What are the Benefits of this New Feature?

This new feature offers several benefits:

  • Enhanced Video Enjoyment: Fast-forwarding lets you skip over lengthy introductions, commercials, or irrelevant sections that might precede the main content of the video. This is especially useful for videos shared from social media or news feeds, which often have intros or outros.
  • Increased Efficiency: No more wasting time searching for that one funny scene you know your friend just sent you, or trying to find that specific product mentioned in a shopping recommendation video. With the fast-forward and rewind options, you can quickly navigate through the video and find what you're looking for in a matter of seconds. This saves time and improves the overall viewing experience on WhatsApp.
  • Improved Accessibility: The fast-forward and rewind feature is also a great accessibility improvement for users who may need to revisit specific details within a video. For example, someone watching a lecture video might need to rewind to catch an important point they missed. Or, someone watching a video with captions might need to rewind to re-read a specific line of text. This feature makes it easier for users with different viewing needs to enjoy and understand videos shared on WhatsApp.

WABetaInfo mentions: “With the new video skip feature, users can now easily navigate within videos they receive or send. This means you can now skip forward to get to the most crucial part of a video or rewind to rewatch something you might have missed without using the progress bar.”

“In our opinion, this feature not only saves time but also enhances content navigation as users can easily rewind to revisit a particular moment or fast forward to skip past less relevant parts. We believe that this functionality adds a level of convenience that was previously unavailable on WhatsApp, making it easier to interact with video content shared on the platform,” it adds.

How Does WhatsApp’s Forward and Rewind Feature Works?

Here's a breakdown of how WhatsApp's new feature allows users to forward and rewind videos:

Double-Tap: It's all about where you tap on the screen. Double-tapping the right side of the video player screen triggers a fast-forward action. Conversely, double-tapping the left side initiates a rewind.

Skip by Seconds: Each double-tap moves the video forward or backwards by 10 seconds. This allows for quick jumps without getting lost in the video entirely.

Manual Scrubbing Still Works:  For those who prefer more precise control, the classic method of dragging the progress bar at the bottom of the video player remains available.
