What is the real story behind Holika Dahan?

According to legend, Hiranyakashipu, the demon king, was so endowed with the boon that neither a man nor an animal could kill him. Overwhelmed by his power, Hiranyakashipu ruled over his subjects and made them worship him alone as God. Hiranyakashipu's son, however, defied his father's orders because he was loyal to Lord Vishnu. Enraged with his son, Hiranyakashipu asked Holika, his sister, to kill him.

Lord Brahma bestowed upon Holika a flame-retardant cloth, which she donned and used to sit on a pyre alongside Prahlad to murder him. Prahlad, however, begged Lord Vishnu to shield him, and the wind that resulted washed the shawl into his possession. Holika perished in the fire, signifying the triumph of righteousness over malevolence.

On the other hand, this festival, known as Kama Dahanam in South India, is connected to the story of Shiva using his third eye to burn Kamadeva to ashes. And as part of the celebration, pantomimes of Kamadeva are performed on this occasion in rural Tamil Nadu, and his effigies are burned.
