When is Mother’s Day 2024?

The second Sunday of May is celebrated as Mother’s Day in Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. In the year 1908, USA-based activist Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honour her mother. It was joined by a huge crowd and later came up as a day to acknowledge the hardships of a mother. 

This year, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on May 12. 

Why is Mother’s Day celebrated?

The history of Mother’s Day dates back to the spring celebration to honour Goddess Rhea, the mother of gods in ancient Greek civilization. Also, it was popular as Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom, a day for people to visit the church and get baptised. 

On the other hand, Mother's Day's more recent beginnings can be traced back to Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, who both played a significant role in the establishment of this American tradition. In 1870, Julia Ward Howe called for Mother's Day to be observed annually. Also, it is said that Juliet Calhoun Blakely started Mother's Day in the 1800s in Albion, Michigan, and her sons honoured her memory by observing the holiday annually and encouraging people to honour their mothers on that day.

Anna Jarvis celebrated Mother’s Day privately in 1907. This was her mother’s birthday. In 1908, she organised a church service that drew in 407 children and mothers. 

Why Is Mother's Day Celebrated On Second Sunday Of May?

US President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be celebrated as Mother's Day. The celebrations quickly spread beyond national borders and into other countries. Today, Mother's Day is celebrated in over 50 countries across the globe.

Is Mother’s Day Twice In A Year?

Mother's Day is celebrated on different days in more than 40 countries across the world. The day is usually celebrated on the second Sunday in May. However, it is also celebrated on other days in March in some countries. 

For instance, India, Canada, Australia, and the United States celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May. Whereas, Mother's Day is celebrated three weeks before Easter Sunday in the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Georgia, Samoa, and Thailand.
