Who Was Holika?
Holika was a powerful demoness in Vedic mythology. She is best known as the sister of King Hiranyakashipu and the aunt of Prahlad.
Born to the sage Kashyapa and Diti, she belonged to the Daitya lineage. Her story takes place during the Satya Yuga in her brother’s kingdom, often associated with the Multan region.
Holika became famous after performing intense penance, which pleased the gods. Most stories say Lord Brahma gave her a special gift: a magical shawl or power that made her immune to fire.
This protection was meant only for her own safety, not to harm others. When Holika tried to use it to burn Prahlad, following her brother's orders, the power disappeared. She died in the fire, and this event marks the beginning of the Holi festival.

The Demon King Hiranyakasyapu had a son named Prahlad, who was a great and immense devotee of Lord Vishnu. The demon king refused to worship Lord Vishnu and did everything he could to stop Prahlad from doing so.
He even threw Prahlad off a high cliff, hoping to kill him, but Prahlad landed gently, as if he had fallen onto a bed of lotus petals, unharmed by the sharp rocks below.
Hiranyakashipu became even angrier each time he failed to break his son's spirit. He could not understand how a child could survive his so-called parenting methods, which were, to say the least, deadly.
Finally, he called his sister Holika, who had a divine garment or, in some stories, a special blessing that made her immune to fire.
After many failed attempts to change Prahlad, Hiranyakashipu told Holika to sit in the middle of a blazing fire with Prahlad on her lap, convinced that this plan would succeed.
As the fire grew, Prahlad stayed calm, closed his eyes, and kept chanting Narayana's name with strong faith.
In a turn of fate, Holika's power to resist fire disappeared because she used it for the wrong purpose. The protective shawl left her and covered Prahlad instead.
Holika was burnt in the fire, but Prahlad emerged unscathed from the ashes. This story of faith winning over evil is the reason behind the festival of Holi, which celebrates the victory of good over evil.
