AMU Students Protest: Hunger-Striking Student Denied Hospital Shift Amid Union Election Demand
Tension prevailed at Aligarh Muslim University after protesting students stopped authorities from taking a student on a 15-day hunger strike to hospital. Students are demanding the restoration of AMU students’ union elections.
Tension prevailed at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) after protesting students prevented university authorities from shifting a postgraduate student to hospital as his health condition deteriorated. The student, Yasir Fahad, has been on a hunger strike for 15 days as part of the ongoing protest demanding elections to the AMU students’ union.
According to officials, a team of security personnel reached the protest site with an ambulance on Tuesday night after Fahad’s health condition worsened. However, a large number of students gathered around him and stopped the authorities from taking him to hospital. The security team later returned without shifting the student.
AMU Protest: Why Are Students Demanding Union Elections?
The students have been demanding elections to the AMU Students’ Union, which they say have not been held for nearly eight years. The current protest began on September 21 and includes an indefinite hunger strike.
A spokesperson for the protesting students said they were concerned about Fahad’s health and urged the university administration to announce dates for the students’ union elections. The protesters have also said that they have lost trust in the administration because of previous experiences.

AMU Proctor Naved Khan said the university had sent the team to provide Fahad with urgent medical support and not to end his hunger strike.
According to Khan, the university had told the protesting students that Fahad could return to the protest site after doctors stabilised his condition. He said the decision to shift the student was taken because several of his health parameters had reached a serious level.
AMU Protest Spreads To Women’s Hostels
The agitation also spread to several women’s hostels on Tuesday night, where students raised slogans demanding elections.
Meanwhile, the AMU Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) has also called for elections to various statutory bodies of the university. AMUTA Secretary Ashraf Mateen said several such bodies had been functioning without elected teacher representatives for more than six years.
The situation remains tense on campus as students continue to press their demand for the restoration of the students’ union elections.
