Sainik Schools to Admit Girl Students: As per the latest update, the Union Government has permitted all Sainik Schools to admit Girl Cadets from academic session 2021-22. Following this decision, Sainik Schools across the country would be able to admit girl students transforming these schools into co-ed institutions. Currently, 33 Sainik schools are operating across different parts of the country and from next this academic session, they will be able to admit girl students as well.
Decision Taken after Successful Pilot Project
The decision to allow admission of girl cadets to Sainik Schools across India has been taken on the basis of the success of a pilot project that was done at 2 schools. Earlier, Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik in Parliament issued a statement saying that "After the success of pilot Project for admission of girl cadets in Sainik School Chhingchhip, Mizoram, in the academic session 2018-19, the government has decided to admit girl cadets along with boys in all Sainik Schools from the academic session 2021-22.”
In addition to this, Mr Naik also said that the government is also planning to start a new scheme which will allow setting up Sainik schools in the country in partnership with NGOs, private schools and state governments. In a written reply to a Question raised in Parliament, Mr Naik said “"The endeavour is to provide schooling opportunities in 'CBSE Plus' type of educational environment by involving desirous government/private schools/NGOs to partner in establishing/aligning their system with Sainik schools ethos, value system and national pride.”
What are Sainik Schools?
Sainik Schools are all-boys schools which were developed to train and develop boy cadets to be inducted into the armed forced. The schools acted like feeder institutions providing a steady flow of trained cadets which Indian Army, Navy and Air Force could induct for entry level positions. Currently, Sainik Schools only induct girls who are the children of the schools’ staff.
