The JEE Main Result 2016 and JEE Advanced 2016 Result were declared in the month of May and June respectively. The formal announcement of JEE Main Rank List today will mark the official beginning of admission season to the premier engineering institutes like Indian Institute of Technology and National Institute of Technology across the country. In addition to this, the ranks will also enable candidates to seek admission to other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) offering engineering courses across India.

JEE Main Rank List 2016: Weightage of Marks
As per the details provided on the JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) website, the JEE Main Rank List is prepared through a normalization process. The JEE Main 2016 Rank List is prepared by the JoSAA by giving 60% weightage to JEE Main score and 40% weightage to 12th class percentage. Therefore, unlike the JEE Main Results which denoted score of a candidate in only the entrance examination, the JEE Main Rank List would also account for the academic performance of the students in respective board examination. All the candidates, who have qualified in the JEE Main Exam 2016 will be provided with a unique rank on the basis of which they can seek admission to engineering courses offered at participating institutes.

Seat Availability
As per the available data, this year, 34,781 engineering seats are up for grabs in 629 different engineering disciplines at 18 GFITs, 20 IIITs, 23 IITs and 31 NITs. If we talk about the top engineering colleges like IITs and NITs, there are 10,575 and 18,013 engineering seats will be allocated through JEE Main Ranks through the JoSAA.

JEE Main Counselling and Joint Seat Allocation Process
The main reason setting up of JoSAA by the HRD Ministry was to provide a single window / platform for seat allocation and counselling for admission to 92 different engineering colleges in the country. After the formal allocation of JEE Main Ranks, the JEE Main Joint Counselling and seat allocation process is expected to kick-off on 24th June 2016, Friday. As per the currently available information, a total of 4 rounds of JEE Main counselling will be held this year.

All the candidates, who have appeared for the JEE Main 2016 Exam can register for the JEE Main Counselling and Joint Seat Allocation Process. However, they can only opt for seats in NITs and all other engineering institutes except IITs and ISM, Dhanbad. Only candidates, who have qualified in JEE Advanced 2016 are eligible to apply for IITs and ISM Dhanbad.
