According to recent reports, the Top 100 universities of the country will be permitted to automatically start online courses for the students under the PM e-VIDYA programmes as part of the Self-reliant Indian Campaign.
Professor D P Singh Chairman of the University Grant Commission (UGC) in an interview stated that the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman has announced the e-VDYA programme to promote online education in the country.
He stated that an integrated version of open and distance learning and online regulation will soon be introduced after being approved by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development. Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme, the top 100 Universities as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2020 will conduct online classes without prior approval of UGC for the 2020-21 session. He further stated that under the PM e-VIDYA programme, more online universities will be introduced which will strengthen online education in the country.
E-learning in the Higher Education sections is being expanded by the government by liberalising open distance and online education regulator framework.
According to a release issued by the MHRD earlier last month, the top 100 universities will start the online courses. The online component in the conventional universities and the Online Distance Learning programmes will also be raised from the present rate of 30 per cent to 40 per cent providing an enhanced learning opportunity to nearly 7 crore students across the country.
Multi-mode access to education will be enabled through the PM e-VIDYA programme and include DIKSHA which will now become the national digital infrastructure providing quality e-content in school education for all the states and Union Territories.
