The wait for around 14 months ended on Friday after Professor Sikander Kumar took charge as the new Vice-Chancellor of the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla. Apart from being a professor of Economics, Kumar is also the president of Bharatiya Janata Party's Scheduled Caste Morcha. He became 26th vice-chancellor of the University. Kumar hails from Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh and his name was recommended by the state government. Before taking charge as the VC of the varsity, he was head of the economics department there.
According to reports, Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj met Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, who has been given additional charge of Himachal, with Kumar's appointment file in Chandigarh. Solanki has been give additional charge because Acharya Dev Vrat of the Governor of the state is on visit to America these days.
Reports suggest that the government had asked thrice till January for applications for the post of VC in HPU and it received around 80 applications. However, name of the economics professor was finalized by Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki on Thursday.
Kumar is the profession of teaching for more than three decades and has written three books - Micro Economics, Statistical Methods and Himalayan Economics. Besides attending 110 seminars, conference and workshops, he has guided seventeen Ph.D students along with 63 MA business economics students and 52 M.Phil students for writing projects.
