The Department of Science and Technology, Central government will be setting up a Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) for data-driven technologies at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad. The Technology Innovation Hub will be set for data-driven technologies at IIIT Hyderabad with a funding of Rs. 110 Crore.
National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems selected IIT Hyderabad for housing the hub and is the only institution apart from the IITs and IISc to make it to the initial list of 17 selected TIHs.
TIH to promote data-driven technology
IIIT Hyderabad has stated that the Technology Innovation Hub- Data will be a part of the Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative announced by IIIT Hyderabad in January jointly with the Telangana Government and chipmaker Intel to play a key role in developing and promoting data-driven technologies and artificial intelligence and machine learning across the country.
Project to support Academic, Research and Development institutions
The institute further stated that TIH-Data which is a Section-8 Company will be a single point source for all data-driven technologies on mobility, healthcare systems, buildings, and India-Specific problems. The initiative will also support projects in the domain areas of TIH to Academic, Research and Development institutions and industry along with other funding agencies. TIH will also participate in international projects, support student startups, and support entrepreneurs along with initiating international collaborative projects.
Special initiative for COVID-19
IIIT-Hyderabad has also begun a special initiative around COVID-19 as part of DST’s Rakshak initiative even as the Hub is being set. According to this a project to curate and compile data sets that can be used to address COVID-19 related solutions around diagnostics and treatment protocols have also been started.
Professor PJ Narayanan Director of IIIT-Hyderabad stated that the institution will focus on creating and curating diverse datasets under the Data Foundation being set up under the hub. He further added that data along with its fair, transparent, and open access are critical to the development of Machine Learning based solutions and translational research will be a particular focus for the hub at IIIT Hyderabad.
The director also pointed out that since IIIT Hyderabad has the largest Artificial Intelligence research group in the country, the institute is looking forward to making research accessible along with significant contributions to data-driven technologies.
