The University of Western Australia (UWA) is set to expand its presence in India with the launch of its Chennai campus after receiving final approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC). The development makes UWA the first Australian and Group of Eight university to receive approval for a campus in Chennai, according to the university.

The Chennai campus will begin student orientation on October 5, while regular classes are scheduled to start on October 19. The new campus is located at One National Park on Velachery Main Road and spans around 70,000 square feet.

The university will initially offer programmes across technology, data and business-related fields. Undergraduate options include Business Management, Computer Science, Data Science and Advanced Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence.

At the postgraduate level, students will be able to pursue a Master of Information Technology and Master of Business Administration (MBA). UWA said the Chennai offering has been designed around areas linked to the region’s strengths in technology, engineering, manufacturing and innovation.

The Chennai launch follows the opening of UWA’s Mumbai campus in September. The university has committed about AUD 80 million towards its wholly owned campuses in India.

Foreign Universities Expand Campus Presence In India

UWA’s Chennai campus comes at a time when more overseas universities are establishing physical campuses in India under the UGC’s 2023 regulatory framework. The framework allows eligible foreign higher education institutions to establish and operate campuses in India, subject to regulatory approval.

In a written reply in Parliament in August, the Ministry of Education said the UGC had issued 16 Letters of Intent to 15 foreign higher education institutions from Australia, Italy, the UK and the US. The proposed campuses are spread across locations including Bengaluru, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Mumbai and Chennai.

Several international institutions have already begun operations in 2026. The University of New South Wales started its Bengaluru campus in August, while Birkbeck, University of London also began operations in Bengaluru. The University of Bristol and the University of York have also welcomed students at their Mumbai campuses this year.

What UGC Rules Mean For Students

Under the UGC framework, foreign universities operating approved campuses in India are required to comply with the applicable Indian regulations. The qualifications awarded through campuses established under the regulations are recognised as equivalent to corresponding qualifications awarded by Indian higher education institutions, with no separate equivalence requirement.

With UWA now preparing to welcome its first Chennai cohort, the campus adds another international option for students seeking foreign university programmes without leaving India. It also expands the range of overseas institutions participating directly in India’s higher education ecosystem.
