On the 6thanniversary of the Kanyashree Scholarship project by the government of West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the scheme has helped in the empowerment of 60 lakh female students from its inception.
The Chief Minister while addressing the beneficiaries of the scheme at the gathering stated that the Kayashree Scheme started in the year 2013 and has helped in empowering over 60 Lakh girls. The total budget of the scheme since its launch is over Rs. 700 crore.
The Chief Minister on Wednesday appreciated all the students and teachers associated with the scheme and said that stopping the discrimination between girls and boys will help in gaining success. While addressing the students she said that there should be no such feeling of hatred in their minds and that the students must learn to spread love.
The Kanyashree scheme was launched in order to prevent the early marriage of girls from the socio-economically weaker families who have an annual income of Rs. 120,000 or less. In the year 2018, the Chief Minister lifted the ceiling on the annual income for the beneficiaries of the scheme which aims to ensure that girls stay in school and delay their marriage until the age of 18.
She also took the opportunity to announce that the government will build a university for the girls from the Kanyashree scheme so that they can pursue higher education. She also added that the state education department will conduct special training camps for the students enrolled under the scheme and has also asked the skill development department to provide skill training to the girls in order to increase their chances at getting jobs.
