International Womens Day

As part of International Women's Day celebrated today - March 8, 2022, the union government has launched the ‘Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav’ scheme with an aim to bring the out-of-school girls back into the education system.

About Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav

The Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav scheme has been launched by the Women and Child Development Ministry in partnership with the Education Ministry. According to available data shared by Women and Child Development Secretary Indevar Pandey, only four lakh out-of-school adolescent girls are visiting Anganwadis for nutrition, nutrition education, and skilling.

The scheme will fulfill the target of the Right to Education Act which works on bringing out-of-school girls back into the system. Pandey has also expressed his hope and stated that the department is working towards attaining a strong position soon and bringing all the girls back to the formal school system.

According to media reports, the Women and Child Development Ministry Secretary have stated that the focus is that all boys and girls get quality education and the department is making conscious efforts to ensure that no child, especially girls are deprived of their right to education.

Programmes conducted for adolescent girls

The department is also conducting programmes for out-of-school adolescent girls which will be driven by the Anganwadi system along with education officers at district and block levels.

According to an official statement, the scheme has been launched as the ‘Scheme for Adolescent Girls’ - SAG which was launched to take care of out-of-school girls but is less effective at the moment.

As per data, in 2018-19 there were 11.88 Lakh girls who were beneficiaries under the SAG scheme which has now come down to 5.03 lakh in 2021. With an aim to combat this problem, the Central Government has launched a new scheme to empower women's education. Pandey also stated that in the new scheme under Poshan 2 and Saksham Anganwadi, the government will only be taking up girls in the age group of 14 to 18 years. Girls between the age of 11 to 14 will not be coming into the Anganwadi system in new schooling which will also be taking care of the northeastern states alone and all other aspirational districts.
