In an objective to promote technical education for women, Delhi Government will soon be setting up a technical university exclusively for women. The decision was taken by Delhi Chief Minister, Shiela Dikshit, on 16 January 2012 during a cabinet meeting.
The Chief Minister informed that the cabinet gave its approval to upgrade the present Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT)- functioning under the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University- to Indira Gandhi Technical University for Women. The university will be set up with the objective of encouraging girls to join technical institutions in large numbers.
Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University Bill-2012 is to be presented in the Legislative Assembly. The university is proposed to be non-affiliating with an objective to build an environment of excellence in engineering education and ensure active participation of women in engineering, science, and technology.
Delhi is all set to be the first ‘state' to have an exclusive technical university for women.
IGIT is a part of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University for the past 12 year and reserves 85 percent seats for women from Delhi.
