  1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 23 January 2015 simplified procedure for External Commercial Borrowings (ECB) Policy. The directions have been issued under sections 10(4) and 11(1) of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999. Changes are effected during the tenure of the ECB.
  2. Shanta Kumar Committee on 21 January 2015 submitted its report on restructuring of Food Corporation of India (FCI) to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  3. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on 19 January 2015 inked a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) with Pan-IIT (Indian Institutes of Technology) to work towards a collective R&D Programme for Developing Indigenous Technologies to enhance Exploration and Exploitation of Hydrocarbons and Alternate Sources of Energy.
  4. United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) on 19 January 2015 released World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2015 report. The report projects that the regional growth will pick up in 2015-16, as average GDP growth will accelerate from 5.0 percent in 2014 to 5.3 percent in 2015 and 5.7 percent in 2016.


  1. Divya Prakash Sinha was on 25 January 2015 appointed as Secretary (Security) in the Union Cabinet Secretariat. His appointment was approved by Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
  2. Major Mukund Varadarajan and Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh were on 26 January 2015 posthumously awarded with the highest peacetime military honour the Ashok Chakra by President Pranab Mukherjee. The awards were received by their wives at the 66th Republic Day celebrations.
  3. The President of India Pranab Mukherjee on 26 January 2015 approved the conferment of Padma Awards 2015 on 104 persons from the fields of activities including art, social work, public affairs, science, trade, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
  4. Eminent Cartoonist Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Laxman died on 26 January 2015 due to cardiac arrest at Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital of Pune in Maharashtra. He was 93. 
  5. Former High Court judge Justice R V Easwar was on 22 January 2015 appointed as Interim Chairman of the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA).
  6. Jasjit Ahluwalia, an eminent Indian-origin researcher and academician, was on 20 January 2015 appointed as the Dean of School of Public Health at the Rutgers University in the US state of New Jersey.
  7. Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri, Ex-Foreign Minister of Pakistan, authored a book titled Neither a Hawk nor a Dove.
  8. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna(PMJDY) on 20 January 2015 made it to Guinness Book of World Records.

  5. The mobile messaging application WhatsApp on 21 January 2015 unveiled a new service for sending messages from a Web browser.
  6. Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and China's e-commerce giant Alibaba on 20 January 2015 signed an agreement to provide global platform to Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
  7. Microblogging site Twitter on 19 January 2015 appointed Taranjeet Singh as Head of Sales for its operation in India.
  8. HDFC bank was named among 50 most valuable banks in 2014 with a market capitalisation of 41.58 billion US dollar. It was ranked at 45th position. 
  9. E-commerce Company Snapdeal signed a 50:50 Joint Venture with television distribution company DEN to launch TV Commerce channel DEN Snapdeal TV shop. The announcement related to this was made by Snapdeal on 20 January 2015.
  10. Apple Inc. on 21 January 2015 acquired United Kingdom based startup firm Semetric Ltd to add music analytics tool in its devices that will measure how fans are following music, TV, games and films.


  1. Miss Colombia Paulina Vega was crowned Miss Universe 2014. She was crowned at the final of 63rd edition of Miss Universe held in Miami, US on 25 January 2015. Vega, a 22-year-old student of business administration from Barranquilla, Colombia was crowned by Miss Universe 2013 winner Gabriela Isler of Venezuela.
  2. Alexis Tsipras on 26 January 2015 sworn in as Prime Minister of Greece. He is the head of Greece's far-left Syriza party.
  3. India-US on 25 January 2015 declared Joint Strategic Vision for the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region. The joint vision was signed during the visit of US President Barack Obama.
  4. Dubai’s Maze Tower was on 21 January 2015 listed in the Guinness World Record for being the world’s largest vertical maze. The maze tower was built by Al Rostamani Group of Dubai.
  5. European Union (EU) on 20 January 2015 decided to lift a seven-month-long ban on the import of mangoes from India. The proposal to lift the ban was voted unanimously by the European Commission’s standing committee on plant health.

  2. Ayonika Paul of Railways and Maharashtra's Annu Raj Singh won a gold medal each in their respective events at the 4th Gun for Glory (GFG) Shooting Championship.
  3. Viktor Troicki of Serbia on 18 January 2015 won Men’s Single title of Sydney International Tennis Tournament.  He won the title by defeating Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-3 in the final.
  4. Weightlifter Jimjang Deru of Arunachal Pradesh on 17 January 2015 created national record in weightlifting by lifting 238 kilograms under the 56 kilograms category. He created the record at the 10th Youth National Weightlifting Championship held in Yamuna Nagar, Haryana.
  5. Cueist Pankaj Advani on 17 January 2015 won National Billiards Championship at the Bengal Rowing Club in Kolkata. He defeated his PSPB mate Dhruv Sitwala 5-0.
