The Punjab Government has approved to increase the number of seats for Post-graduation (MD/MS) in Government Medical College, Patiala. The decision of adding 72 more seats to the existing 133 MD/MS seats in the medical college has been taken to give momentum to medical research and tertiary healthcare services in Medical institutes run by the state.
As told by sources the extra seats would be added in all clinical and non-clinical departments of the college. Government Medical College is the only Government institute to offer tertiary healthcare to a large part of its districts of south Punjab.
As of now, there are 133 seats for several PG courses in the college. Besides, state government the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, has also approved 72 more MD/MS seats. However, the approval by the Medical Council of India (MCI) is awaited which is being expected to be received in couple of months, told Principal, Dr K D Singh.
The seats were planned to increase only after the Union government gave green signal to provide funds under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
Besides, Centre the Punjab Government would also supply 25% of the total budget to meet the resources expenses and to upgrade the college and hospital which may occur after the add-on of seats, told Dr Singh.
The laboratories and clinical units with the essential equipments have already been upgraded to meet the sufficient requirements after the seats would be added. In addition, the recruitment for new teachers and senior residents is also been going on, Dr Singh said eith optimism.
