Gujarat will now see 7,164 more seats added to Technical Colleges spread across the state, after All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved for the increase in intake capacity in colleges. The total number of seats in engineering colleges has rose to become 70,105 and this figure also incorporates 1,800 new seats from the six new colleges approved by the AICTE.
Before the increase in intake capacity, there were total 62,951 engineering seats but after 6 new colleges --three in Ahmedabad, and one each from Rajkot, Vallabh Vidyanagar and Navsari, the, 1800 seats more came on offer.
According to officials, some of these new colleges will also receive approval to offer diploma courses.
The letter of intent for the six new colleges has already been issued by AICTE, now only the final approval has to be by the Apex body.
Officials added that among the roughly 70,000 seats on offer in the state, only 69,741 students got clearance from examination of Gujarat board, out of which further 63,000 candidates will only be eligible for the admission. Candidates apply mostly to branches as civil, mechanical, electrical and computers.
This year it is expected that around 12000 odd seats will go untaken and those will be from lower branches to which less students are interested to apply to or those who do not have good infrastructure or are located to remote areas, as per the officials. Last year the figure of vacant seats was 9000.
