Higher Education Dialogue between India-US to Bring Development in Education Sector

The Higher Education Dialogue was recently held at New Delhi between India and US which was co-chaired by Mr. Satya N. Mohanty, Secretary, Higher Education, Ministry for Human Resource Development, India and Mr. Richard Stengel, U.S. under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. The dialogue was the third in the row, where the first two had been held previously in Washington in June 2012 and at New Delhi in June 2013.

The dialogue saw the two countries talking about various fields of development of community colleges, massive open online courses, student and faculty exchange programmes and skill development. In order to promote enhanced opportunities in students and scholars between the two countries the dialogue paved way for mutual co-operation. They talked upon the issues like community colleges, improvement of workforce training, expansion of research and teaching exchanges, collaboration on education technology and innovation, and industry-academia linkages in higher education.

In order to meet Prime Minster Modi’s National skills development goals, importance was given to the ongoing community colleges and a meeting prior to the dialogue was also held. The task force who met before the dialogue discussed a plan for implementation on the recently concluded Memorandum of Understanding signed between the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

The Dialogues also saw the accomplishments given by both the countries on their collaboration with the students of IIT and the services they have exchanged. From the dialogue it came out that the US would help extend technical cooperation for the further development and one of the new IITs that are to be set up in India. For India’s Global Initiative of Academics Network (GIAN) programme too, the countries allowed to cooperate with faculty development by providing US faculty to take up short-term teaching and research programmes in Indian Institutes.
