Course
Two types of courses are available in hotel management. After 12th B.A. in Hotel Management, Diploma in Hotel Management, Bachelor Degree in Hotel Management, Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management, Bachelor degree in Hospitality Science, B.Sc. in Hotel Management and Catering Science are available. Duration of these courses ranges from 6 months to 3 years. PG Diploma in Hotel Management, M.Sc. in hotel management and MA in Hotel Management can be done from some colleges. Duration of these courses is 2 years. Several specialized courses are also available in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru based Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition. Duration of these courses is between 6 months to a year. Names of these courses are- Food Production Management, Dieting and Nutrition, House Keeping, Front Office and Tourism Management, etc. Currently one can directly be appointed as a manager after completing M.Sc. in hotel management. For this, an entrance test has to be cleared. Most institutions select students based on all India admission tests and interviews.
Fees
Fees in public institutions is low, but if one wishes to do diploma in hotel management from private institutions the fees could be anywhere between 50 thousand to one lack, for a post graduate degree this fees jumps to between 1.5 to 2 lacks.
Scope
According to a report by ASSOCHAM, in 2010 hotel industry’s position is good. Every college has a placement cell which helps in finding jobs. After successful completion of the course, there is no dearth of jobs in private as well as government sector. However, where and what kind of job one lands into, is dependent upon the students capabilities and the level of the institute. After completion of the course students can not only get jobs in five star hotels, restaurants, food service of airlines, Hospital, Armed Forces, corporate canteens, malls, multiplexes, railway, shipping etc., but plenty of jobs are available in fast food sector also. Own business can also be started.
Salary
Certificate course or a diploma holder can expect an initial salary of 10 to 15 thousand rupees per month. With experience, the payoff increases even more.
