    With the increase in demand for engineering education in the country, hundreds of new engineering colleges have come up in the last decade that promises world-class engineering education. Considering that candidates are often spoilt for choice, it becomes very difficult for them to choose an engineering college for higher studies. Very few students are aware of the different factors that should be taken into consideration before taking admission in an engineering college. With the following check points, candidates can ensure the admission to a better institute.

    1. Establishment

    The phrase ‘Old is Gold’ remains a norm for several things in life and it certainly applies to engineering colleges. Riding on the hype of engineering courses as a sure-shot way to success, hundreds new engineering colleges have sprung up in the last decade of so. While, the age of an engineering college need not necessarily translate to the quality of education provided there, but it surely gives candidates a more in-depth look at the general performance of the institute over the years. Therefore, one of the first things that engineering aspirants must consider before picking the right engineering college is the establishment year and their performance over the period of this time.

    2. Accreditation & Affiliations

    As stated above, many new engineering colleges have sprung up in the last decade or so to cash in on the rising demand for engineering education in the country. However, not all these engineering institutes have the required accreditation & affiliations to offer engineering courses. Therefore, before getting admitted to any college in India, students must ensure that the college they pick has all the right accreditations and affiliations. Accreditation for engineering institutes is provided by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education, whereas for university affiliated engineering programmes the approval is provided by the UGC (University Grants Commission). Considering the tricky situation that students are in, both AICTE and UGC provide information about affiliated or accredited institutes on their official website. A simple google search about the same could go a long way in helping you choose the right engineering college.

    3. Certifications

    NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) and NBA (National Board of Accreditation) are the agencies in India which provide category certifications to an institute. For instance, premier institutes IITs and NITS come under A/A+ category. If any institute is claiming any such type of certifications then it must be checked on the official websites of these agencies. Along with confirming the authenticity of the information provided by the respective college, these certifications are also a testament to the quality of engineering programme offered by the institute.

    4. Reputation

    The reputation of an engineering college can be checked on the social media channels like Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter etc. Reputation can be checked by the comments posted by the students and faculties on the social media page of the institute. Apart from this, there are several student forums like My Josh, which also offers space for discussion among students and alumni of the institutes to discuss factors like education quality, infrastructure, faculty and other important aspects of an engineering college. Students are advised to do thorough research on the reputation of engineering college before taking a final call.

    5. Faculty Members

    There is a famous quote which terms educators as the heart if any educational institute and this is very much true even in the case of the engineering colleges. While all other factors are quite important, nothing is more critical than faculty members of an engineering institute. Therefore, it is very important to check that how many of full time faculty members are there at the institute as if the number of full time faculties is less than there will be very hindrances in the course completion. The quality of faculty must also be checked as on the grounds like teaching experience, degree of the professors etc.

    6. Student-Faculty Ratio

    Student-faculty ratio explains the number of faculties per student, like 15:1 states that for every 15 students there is 1 faculty. Lower the student-faculty implies a better institute.

    7. Batch Strength

    This factor is also directly related to the one mentioned above. In fact, this is quite self-explanatory in nature; the less number of students in the class the more a teacher or professor will be able to focus on a particular student.

    8. Infrastructure

    Nowadays, there is a very common practice among private engineering colleges to project their infrastructure the core part of their marketing plan to attract engineering aspirants. However, under all that hype, students must consider that infrastructure is more than just a fancy looking building. Just like faculty members, infrastructure will also play a pivotal role in ensuring that you have quality engineering education. While checking for infrastructural facilities at engineering colleges, students must check the availability of library, labs, location, transportation, classrooms etc. In addition to considering the availability, students must also keep in mind that these facilities are adequate in accordance to the total number or intake of students. Better infrastructure provides better learning experience and a more appropriate learning environment.

    9. Curriculum

    While faculty members and infrastructure are enabling tools to help you gain good engineering education, what is to be taught and how it is to be taught is decided on the basis of course curriculum followed by the engineering college. The curriculum is a combination of the educational syllabus and the teaching pedagogy followed by a particular educational institution to train students in the respective subject. This makes curriculum the most important aspect for all engineering colleges. In addition to this, while checking the course curriculum students must also check for the variety of programmes, courses and specializations available at the engineering college. A large number of courses mean a better facility for a student to choose a course as per his/her choice.

    10. Graduation rates & Research Opportunities

    Graduation rate means how many students are completing their degree from the particular institute every year. If the number is high then it definitely states that the institute provides better teaching facilities. If there is research & development facility is available in an institute then it can be considered that the institute supports the innovation of a candidate.

    11. Tie-ups/ Study Abroad Programmes / Internships / Scholarships

    This is another parameter which automatically enhances the reputation of any engineering college. A good number of foreign university tie-ups, company tie-ups and study abroad program ensure a better exposure of a candidate, whereas internships and scholarships ensure better participation of a candidate. This parameter should also be checked before admission.

    12. Alumni network

    The biggest testimony to the success of any engineering college is their Alumni Network. Looking at the successful alumni of the engineering colleges you have shortlisted with given some detailed insights into the pros and cons of the institute. In other words, alumni network can be considered as the achievements of the engineering college made by the institute. Alumni candidates holding good posts in private, public or government organizations represent the better studies and placement services at the institute.

    13. Placement

    At the end of the day, aspirants choose engineering because it is a professional course that offers excellent employment opportunities at respectable posts in private as well as governmental sectors. And Engineering colleges play a pivotal role in helping you get your first break in the job market. Therefore, placement is one of the most important factors to be checked by a candidate before taking admission. Generally, reputed engineering colleges provide data about past placement seasons on their official websites. Apart from this, placement information about engineering colleges can also be found on popular educational portals like jagranjosh.com, news and media channel websites. Students can also check the social media accounts of institutes and alumni to determine the effectiveness of the placement programme offered by the institute.

    14. Hostel Facilities

    The final thing that should be checked in your prospective engineering college is the hostel facilities on offer. Considering that admission to engineering colleges is based on your performance in an entrance examination and the counselling session which follows it, you might not always be placed in a college that is near to your residence. Therefore, hostel facilities play a pivotal role in engineering education in the country. In addition to checking the availability of hostel facilities, students should also check for the quality of infrastructure offered at the hostels and how the general environment is there at the place of your stay. Another thing to keep in mind while choosing the right engineering college for you would be the hostel fees.
