Decoding Banking Jobs: An Overview

The first question that comes to the mind of the job seekers regarding any field is what kind of job is on offer along with the pay packages, job conditions and career growth. We should look at the various jobs available at the moment in the flourishing banking sector of the country.

  • Clerks/Assistants: This is the entry level post for the clerical cadre in banks. The duties involve cash handling, account opening, marketing of bank products etc. The gross salary is around 18000 at the moment. The promotional aspects are very good for this post. Probationary Officers (PO): This is the entry level cadre for recruitment in the management cadre of the bank. Officers are responsible for supervising the clerical staff, loan disbursal and appraisal, marketing of bank products etc. The starting salary is around 37000 at the moment and again, the promotional aspects are very high.
  • Specialist Officers: These officers are recruited for specialised verticals of the bank such as legal department, HR, IT, Agriculture etc. The salary offered is same as that of PO though the promotional aspects are not as good as a PO.

Recruitment in Banks: Present Scenario

Most of the recruitments in the banking sector are carried out by IBPS these days. An open competitive examination followed by an interview is conducted for this purpose. The examinations are dependent on the posts for which one has applied. While most public sector banks recruit from IBPS Common Written Examination and Common Interview, some banks such as RBI, SBI, SIDBI, NABARD and NHB conduct individual examinations for the same.

So, what do you need to study to be a banker? That is what most of you have been wondering, right? Most of the bank exams are dependent on the following subjects:

  • English Language
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Reasoning
  • General Awareness(with special reference to Banking industry)
  • Computer Knowledge
  • Marketing Aptitude
  • Professional Knowledge

The trick is to get the basics of all these subjects clear and then practice as much as possible. Banking exams are more about speed with accuracy rather than knowledge. So, keep in mind the famous line: “Practice Makes a man Perfect” and practice as much as you can in the online module use for bank exams in order to familiarise yourself with the pattern.
