Q: Why is Time Management important for IAS Prelims Exam?
A: World Famous Management thinker Peter F Drucker once said, “Until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else.” In case of UPSC Civil Services Exam, which is arguably the world’s toughest competitive exam, it is all the more relevant.
Thinking over repeatedly and practicing an activity over a period makes it as our habit, and these habits determine our Attitude and in turn our Character. A civil servant, who is supposed to be always under a lot of work pressure, has to understand the importance of time management. This is precisely why the selection process has intentionally been made sensitive to Time management Skills of candidates.
Time management will help a candidate in two ways, first during the preparation stage and second during the exam itself.
As it is not a secret that the Syllabus of General Science and optional papers is huge, completion of these areas has to be achieved comprehensively and within a specific period of time. A candidate has to cover Newspapers, magazines, PIB and other websites and not just books. Also not to forget the overhead costs of staying and managing the ways of a new city if one is preparing in cities like Delhi.
On the other hand, now we have to write almost 5000 words in a GS Mains paper and have to complete 80 questions of IAS Prelims GS Paper II with enough accuracy. Unless and until Time management is developed as a Character, just imagining that ‘oh yes, I will do it at the time of exam’ would make us like Alice living in a wonderland.
