IIT Kanpur to get a new flexible electronic center

A flexible electronic center, where research will be conducted on electronic gadgets like TV and LCDs, will be set up at IIT Kanpur with the Union government giving its approval for it. The estimated cost for the project is Rs 133 crore. Out of this, Rs 113 crore will be funded by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology at the Centre while IIT Kanpur will have to raise Rs 20 crore on its own. The center will be the first of its kind in the country.
The electronic centre will provide platform to the students to carry out extensive research on electronic gadgets like Sensors, Solar Panels, Display Units, Security Package, Televisions, LCD’s and other ways of developing flexible display. Along with the researches basic studies and scientific investigations relevant to field of “Large Area Flexible Electronics” will also be conducted at the centre. The center will also facilitate the formation of industrial ecosystem by addressing various products, materials and machines, aspects and academic ecosystem by engaging with reputed international & national centres. Some of the products that will be envisaged in this Electronic Centre are anti-counterfeiting printed electronic solutions for medicine package, printable electronic tags for brand protection, flexible solar module, flexible temperature sensor and conductive inks, circuit lab on paper, OLED lighting.
It will take around two years to complete the centre in all aspects. The centre will function as a national centre in the area and there will be a very close interaction between the centre and the industry.
