Unrecognized schools are still functioning under the UDISE+ system, despite the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE). According to the RTE Act, schools established before the implementation of the Act that do not fulfill the required norms must comply within three years of the Act’s commencement. If these schools fail to meet the norms, their recognition is to be withdrawn, and they should cease to operate.
However, a significant number of such schools remain active in the UDISE+ system. This situation could lead to violations of the RTE Act, which might dilute the learning outcomes and educational standards.Schools operating without proper recognition may undermine the educational system and deprive children of their rights to quality education. A clear timeline has been set for these actions, with a deadline of March 31, 2025.
Action Required:
- States and UTs are requested to issue suitable instructions to the concerned authorities regarding the recognition of unrecognized schools.
- A report of the actions taken should be submitted to the DoSE&L at the earliest.
State wise summary of the Number of Unrecognized Schools which were allowed to continue for 3 years after the implementation of RTE Act, 2009 but continue to exist and require interventions of States/UTs for action as per Act.
