The Maharashtra State Government passed the resolution of awarding scholarships worth Rs. 1000/- to UPSC aspirants from the state with a motive to encourage them to join civil services.
The scholarship will be awarded to the candidates for main exam which would continue till the interview stage. Apart from scholarship of Rs. 1000/-, the candidates will be given free coaching from specialized coaching in institutes in New Delhi which are approved by the state government.
The decision to this effect was taken in January and the resolution was announced on 16 April 2016. The government resolution states that candidates residing in Maharashtra with family of income less than one lakh per annum will be eligible for the scheme. Moreover, the candidates must have cleared the UPSC preliminary exam in the last three years. It would be mandate to appear for the UPSC Exam once the scholarship is received. If they don't, the scholarship amount has to be returned to the government. The candidates are also required to submit a monthly report of their studies to the government.
It was decided by the cabinet earlier that a specially empowered committee headed by additional chief secretary of the state planning department would scrutinize the applicants. The committee will also have the powers to frame the guidelines and conditions to be followed to avail the scholarship.
