Mission Mausam UPSC: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Mission Modi on the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Mission Mausam aims to make India ‘Weather Ready’ and ‘Climate Smart.’ The mission seeks to exponentially enhance the country’s weather and climate observations, understanding, modelling and forecasting, leading to better, more useful, accurate and timely services.
What is Mission Mausam?
The Mission Mausam is developed with an outlay of Rs 2000 crore and will be primarily implemented by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting, which all come under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). Currently the Mission Mausam has been implemented for 2024-26 and aims to make Bharat a "weather-ready and climate-smart" nation. Mission Mausam will develop cutting-edge weather surveillance technologies & systems and it will be helped by other MoES institutions such as the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and the National Institute of Ocean Technology.

- Develop improved earth system models and data-driven methods (use of AI/ML)
- Develop Technologies for weather management
- Develop state-of-the-art dissemination system for last-mile connectivity
What is IMD?
The India Meteorological Department was established in 1875. It is the National Meteorological Service of the country that provides current and forecast meteorological information for optimum operation of weather-sensitive activities like agriculture, irrigation, shipping, aviation, etc. It also provides inputs against severe weather phenomena like tropical cyclones, norwesters, duststorms, heavy rains and snow, cold and heat waves, etc.
