Preference to New-Age Jobs by IIT Graduates than Core Engineering Jobs

    Rather opting for core engineering (manufacturing) jobs the new breed of IIT graduates are opting for new-age jobs in Finance, Consultancy and Software who have passed engineering in Civil, mechanical and electrical fields. This year’s placement season saw software major Oracle offering Rs. 2.03 crore to an IIT (BHU) student which is highest till now for the session. The highest package offered by Microsoft last year was Rs. 65 Lakh. Thus the jump has been significant from last year in the highest-segment salary and has increased by 35%.

    Notable Placements of the Year

    By the end of the third day in the placements this year only one fourth of the students from IIT Bombay engineering and technology firm have got offers. From the 430 offers that were made in the campus, only 116 were from core engineering profiles. Rests of them were from consulting (96), finance (75), IT/Software (112), Analytics (54), Research & Development (55), Sales & Marketing and others.

    Last year, one-third of the 1,067 students who got places got into engineering and technology firms. This year the startups and e-commerce companies has hired quite a lot of students. E-commerce firm Flipkart hired 16 students from IIT-Bombay and 19 from IIT-Madras. It made 26 offers at IIT Kharagpur and 20 at IIT-Kanpur.

    Around 50 students from IIT Bombay got selected at a new startup named Ola Cabs, which is the highest from any IIT this year. EXL services turned out to be the best hiring company in IIT-Kanpur this year as it offered 38 offers and a salary of Rs. 55 lakh.
