Quality English Teachers can Help Improve Performance in Maths: Stanford Study Report

    To boost your Mathematics score, make sure you have a proficient English teacher, teaching you. This is a finding revealed from a research conducting by Stanford University scholars that startled many. The sample for this research is fairly a huge figure i.e. 7, 00, 000 students, falling in the bracket of 3rd – 8th standards. Their performances were examined in New York City during the year 2003 to 2010.

    The researcher’s findings revealed that students having taught by good language arts teachers scored higher than expected in mathematics in following years - a crossover effect. Wheras, students having good math faculty had only less long-term effects on their English marks.

    The cause about why exactly a good English teaching enhances score in Mathematics or other subjects is not clear, yet, but researchers hypothesized that it is related to comprehending better, as other subjects require some amount of reading and writing hence in maths also the one who read, understand and analyze word problems well, also do well in math.

    The definition of a good English teacher in the research h paper was described as the one who generates above average increases in student marks/scores in tests. The study also highlighted that the effect of good teachers on student’s test scores stays for long period than those of other average teachers.

    The study was conducted on students who in majority had English as their mother tongue and medium of instruction was English.

    In India, the same case may be noticed with the language we speak and are proficient in, instead of English.
