Class XI students of the state higher secondary board, West Bengal are sure dancing to the rhythm of victory. Starting next year, 2013, the Class XI exam will be replaced by a problem solving assessment test of three-hour duration, comprising 100 marks worth of multiple choice questions. The grueling six day exam schedule will now be replaced to just a day’s tenure.
At present, the Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE) has asked the state boards to sanction and implement the policy. The HS Council will further again, seek sanction for the COBSE decision in its executive council meeting and then send it to the government for the final approval.
Though the students can take the test in their schools, the answer scripts will be checked centrally at regional offices of the council. Also, the Class XI score will be reflected in the HS board mark sheet. As a matter of fact, CBSE has already implemented the system from its 2012 session.
The reformation in the system has been made to not only reduce the soaring stress levels of the students but also the checking of umpteen number of answer sheets would be solved. Not to forget, the evaluation of the answer sheets in the regional centres will make it a fair game plan.
A question booklet will be given to the students along with a Weimar sheet which will have a carbon copy. The students can take home the question and a copy of the Weimar sheet. Model answers will be uploaded on the council website after a week, so that the students can assess their marks.
Apart from this welcome change, the West Bengal Higher Secondary Council has already accepted the HRD ministry's decision to allow the top 20 percentile students from each state board to qualify for IIT-JEE. This is a great step taken that would focus on imparting quality education rather than running against time and merely finishing the stipulated syllabus.
