Selection Procedure for Government School Teacher

Dec 22, 2015, 12:45 IST

TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) is basically a teaching certification test for determining eligibility of candidates to be school teachers in both government as well as private schools.

Teaching is one of the most popular professions among the Indian youth today. Being a government school teacher, is not only a great career choice but also a respected profession that offers excellent salary, perks and stability. Despite being one of the most sought after career choices, not many teaching jobs aspirants are familiar with the exact selection process to be a government school teacher.

With the introduction of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act; the government of India has modified the selection procedure for government school teachers through Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Below, we shall discuss TET and the selection procedure for government school teachers.

Teacher Eligibility Test (TET)

TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) is basically a teaching certification test for determining eligibility of candidates to be school teachers in both government as well as private schools. Not just government schools, but private schools too are recruiting teachers based on the TET certification. The test is mandatory for anyone willing to become a school teacher. The central government conducts annual Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) to shortlist candidates for appointment to CBSE schools. On similar lines, state level TET examinations are also held to appoint teachers in schools funded, aided and run by the state government. While, CTET certification is applicable to all the schools in Indian Territory, state TET certification is applicable to the schools falling within the ambit of state concerned. The main reason behind constitution of TET was to establish a standard of teaching in the schools across the state as well as the nation.

Selection Procedure for Govt School Teacher

The selection procedure for government school teacher is pretty straight forward through a TET written examination. The TET entrance examination consists of two papers i.e., Paper 1 and Paper 2. Candidates willing to teach Classes I to V should appear for TET Paper 1, whereas candidates willing to teach in higher classes of VI to VIII have to appear for TET Paper 2. Candidates willing to teach classes from I to VIII have can appear for both the papers.

After Clearing the TET

After clearing the TET for either primary (Classes I to V) or upper primary or junior high school (Classes VI to VIII) level, the applicant is considered qualified and eligible to teach the classes in any school within the state as mentioned in the TET notification. The candidate will also be issued a TET certificate that will enable them to seek employment in any government school within the state as per the vacancy available at that time.

Interview Stage

Clearing TET examination does not guarantee you a job as a Government School Teacher. Candidates will have to go through the personal interview process, where their expertise in the subject matter, interpersonal skills and teaching skills will be assessed and on basis of that appointment will be done as a teacher in government school.
