Commerce has grown tremendously and is known for providing a wide scope of career options to pursue after class 12. Generally, the students who wish to work in a corporate world, select the commerce field in their education. It offers them a wide arena of career options to pursue after class 12. A number of people often think that choosing commerce means becoming a chartered accountant which is not so. Students need to realise that there are many other options available in the field and they need to keep an eye out for all these options.

    Here we have compiled a list of some profitable job oriented courses to be pursued after passing class 12 with commerce stream. This will help the students to check out the best career options in future.

    1. Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)

    B.Com. is a course of 3 years’ duration which allows students to venture on to other job oriented courses such as M.B.A., vocational courses, skill oriented courses, etc. After the completion of B.Com. students may go for M.Com. This 2 years masters program helps the students to gain proficiency in selected stream and in turn get wider opportunities in job sector. Other than that, there are a number of job opportunities for simply B.Com. graduates, both in private as well as government sectors in the field of accountancy and finance.

    2. Chartered Accountant (CA)

    Chartered Accountancy Course is a professional course in Accounting. With the rapid growth in economy, careers in finance and accounts have gained tremendous popularity and the most prestigious career option in this field is that of a Chartered Accountant. Job of a CA is to check if the financial affairs of businesses and companies are in accordance with the laws set by Government authorities. To become a CA, one has to successfully complete Chartered Accountancy course and become a member of ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India). 

    Becoming a chartered accountant is a four stage procedure:

    (i) Common Proficiency Test

    (ii) Integrated Professional Competence Course

    (iii) Three years Article ship / Training under a Practicing Chartered accountant

    (iv) CA Final

    After having passed the final examination of CA, you can find many exciting career prospects ahead. A CA is qualified for various prestigious positions in the finance department in private companies as well as in government enterprises.

    3. Company Secretary Program (CS)

    The company secretary is one of the powered and prestigious job profiles. Every company requires a  company secretary for its efficient administration. A company secretary is a senior position in a private sector company or public sector organisation, normally in the form of a managerial position or above. To become a C.S., one has to appear for Company Secretaryship course and clear the exams associated with the course. The CS course is conducted by the ICSE (Institute of Company Secretaries of India).

    The CS course is divided into three levels as the following:

    (i) Foundation Course

    (ii) Intermediate/Executive Course

    (iii) Final/Professional Course

    After completion of professional course and 15 months training student is joined as associate member of the ICSI and called as Associate Company Secretary. Better communication, leadership and problem solving skills added with relevant experience can lead you to the top positions like managing director or the chairman of any organization.

    4. Cost Management Accountant (CMA)

    Cost Management Accountants (CMA) are strategic financial management professionals with accounting skills and leadership competencies. Generally a cost accountant’s job is to collect and analyze the financial information from all the areas of a company required to manage business within the available resources. The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) formerly known as ICWAI (Institute of Cost & Works Accountants of India) is a premier institution of India which offers education and develops the proficient cost accountants that are highly demanded in the government sector, private enterprises, banking & finance sector.

    Like CS, CMA course has also been divided into three stages:

    (i) CMA Foundation

    (ii) CMA Intermediate and

    (iii) CMA Final. 

    With the advancement of the economy, demand for cost management professionals is rising rapidly at national as well as international platforms.

    5. Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)

    It is the another most sought bachelor degree programme after Class 12. BBA is the three-year bachelor degree programme for those who are interested in leadership and management positions. Students having BBA degree are considered as professionals and are extremely employable for higher positions in any business organizations. After completion, one may also follow it up with an M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration) Degree which provides the ground knowledge required for producing the sound management professionals. Many prestigious colleges offer MBA programmes through CAT/ MAT. Though jobs are available for B.B.A. graduates in government sector but private sector offers more opportunities in management and finance related positions .

    6. Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM)

    The Hotel management is one of the highly job oriented field. It certainly has got elements of hospitality sector. This is a 4 years degree course. With the globalization more and more hotel industries are expanding their business to the global markets. This has created a huge demand of hotel management professionals. Thus hotel management has emerged out to be a hot career option for last decade. Through this course, you can serve government as well as non-government sectors. Moreover, it is a very demanding profession in abroad. Since, this service sector acts as one of the major revenue generating industry, professionals working in this area are definite to earn lucrative salary packages with growing experience.
