UGC scholarships & fellowships to be linked with Aadhar accounts

The University Grants Commission has decided to link all the scholarships and fellowships provided to the students with their respective Aadhar accounts. The applicants receiving the scholarships and fellowships would also have to provide their Aadhar number.

The existing scholarship expenditure under the All India Council of Technical Education would also come under the Aadhar payment bridge system, administered by UGC.

According to a notification issued by AICTE, “Only such scholarships for which Aadhar numbers are uploaded, verified and seeded to their bank accounts will be processed for payment from September 2016.”

The candidates who have applied for scholarship for the year 2017-18, need to update their forms to add their Aadhar numbers. They need to fill up the Aadhar card details by 8 August, 2016 to avoid suspension of their scholarship. The candidates who would not fill up their Aadhar details would not be awarded the scholarship any further. According to one UGC officer, “The decision to link scholarship accounts with Aadhar cards is to ensure that the applications are genuine and the student gets the scholarship sum immediately.”

Not only UGC, but AICTE also mandated that the Aadhar card detail of the students acquiring scholarships is a must and they should provide the information in proper channel before the last date.

The new decision of UGC to link the Aadhar details of the students to the scholarships would ensure that there are no malpractices in part of the students to acquire the scholarship amount in any way possible.
