For someone who has an interest in music, or likes to talk or to present things, a career as a jockey could be fulfilling and highly remunerative. Relatively speaking, a jockey’s career has a short life span. But in this short span, one can earn so much money, name, and fame that it’s hard to find any negative aspect in this career.
Work
The job of a video jockey or a VJ is to provide information about music videos and to host music related shows on television. In an era of increasing competition, different television channels are starting all kinds of new shows in order to increase viewer ratings, and tap into the youth of today. This has hiked the importance of a video jockey, hence providing new opportunities. Besides hosting music shows, their work now includes hosting game shows, youth programmes, interviews of celebrities, quiz shows, promotional activities, road shows, etc.
Eligibility
This profession does not require any specific educational background or formal training. What one needs is an interest in music, right body language, a good voice and command over the language. Nevertheless, a background in mass communication, visual communication or performing art may help. Apart from this, a VJ can improve upon his work and voice through voice training.
Individual Characteristics
A video jockey should always keep herself/himself updated on the new trend in music, videos, music stars and other celebrities. In addition, they should have some basic knowledge and information about all kinds of music. Apart from being quick-witted and easy talker, a VJ should also know how to keep the viewers engaged through jokes and anecdotes. Additionally, a VJ should be presentable which results from proper dressing and grooming.
Scope
There is ample opportunity for VJs in music channels, music shows and film related programmes. Many VJs host shows in other countries. Apart from anchoring, an experienced VJ can also work in theater, movies and music videos. If he/she manages to acquire fame and status then several other avenues also open up.
Earning
A video jockey’s earnings depend mainly on the popularity of his show. More popular the show becomes, more is the income.
