Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government has turned the dream of sustainable and affordable electricity in the region of Punjab into reality. Since July 2022, every household consumer has been receiving 300 units of free electricity per month which in turns provides relief to millions of families.
According to observations and official data, households are saving between ₹1,500 and ₹2,000 each month. Gurmeet Kaur from Jalandhar shares, “My monthly bill used to be ₹2,000, but now with a zero bill, I can use that money for my children’s education.”
A significant benefit of this policy has been seen directly in the agriculture sector. A farmer from Fatehgarh Sahib, Amrik Singh mentions that they now get 24-hour uninterrupted electricity for irrigation, which has cut down their expenses on diesel and generator. To further boost the power capacity of the state, the government has taken over the 540-megawatt Goindwal Thermal Plant in Tarn Taran, which is now named as the Shri Guru Amardas Thermal Power Plant.
Spanning 1,100 acres, this facility is becoming a key player in Punjab’s push for self-reliant energy .Chief Minister Mann said, “Our goal is not just free electricity, but an energy system that makes people’s lives easier and strengthens the state’s economy.”
