China, on 4 January 2011, became one of the world’s largest offshore oil producer countries after the United States, England and Norway. China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) announced that its oil and natural gas output exceeded 60 million metric tonnes in 2010. In recent times, offshore oil exploration has played an important role to meet the requirements of growing demand for energy in China. It is estimated that by 2015, 40 percent of the world’ total oil production would be contributed by offshore oil and offshore gas will be 35 percent of the total gas production.
CNOOC is China’s largest offshore oil explorer. It has tapped South America, Africa, West Asia and Australia for cooperation in its oil and gas projects.
