Delhi Airport (DEL) has once again retained its position in the top 10 busiest airports in the world in 2023, published by Airports Council International (ACI) every year. The airport catered to over 72.2 million passengers in 2023, which was 20.36% more than that of 2022. This steady growth shows the strong recovery of the Indian Aviation sector post-COVID.
As per the ACI preliminary rankings, Delhi Airpost has slightly slipped, yielding its 9th spot to Chicago Airport. The recent ACI rankings highlight a dynamic shift in the traveling pattern by air route.
What is ACI?
Airport Council International (ACI) is an organisation of airport authorities, set to standardize airport practices globally. The headquarters of ACI is based in Montreal city of Quebec, Canada. The organisation operates more than 2000 airports all around the world.
ACI Ranking Trends
As per the ACI reports, the 2023 global total passenger forecast stands at 8.5 billion. This trend shows a remarkable recovery of air travel from the pre-pandemic world. The recovery stands at almost 93.8% from pre-pandemic levels and an increase of 27.2% than 2022.
As per a statement said by ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira, “Global air travel in 2023 was chiefly fuelled by the international segment, propelled by several factors.”
ACI Ranking: Important Highlights
ACI published its preliminary ranking of global airports recently. There have been some important findings that came out in this report.
- Preliminary ranking indicates 2023 global passengers figure close to 8.5 billion. It is 27.2% more than 2022. It also represents a recovery of 98.3% air passengers from pre-pandemic time.
- Domestic market growth is found to be 20.2%, a recovery of 96.8% of year 2019.
- International market grew with 36.5% growth rate, which is a total 90.4% recovery of 2019.
- The top 10 airports witnessed an increase of 19.8% global traffic than 2022.
- Dubai International Airport secured second position for the very first time, surpassing Dallas Forth Worth International Airport. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport still maintained its first position.
- Total 5 Airports from US made into the list of TOP 10 rankings.
- Tokyo Haneda made the longest jump in the rankings, leaping from 16th spot to 5th position in 2023.
