Endangered Tigers, Lions and Red Pandas died due to Canine Distemper Virus: Scientists

Endangered tigers, red pandas and lions are perishing due to infection caused by Canine Distemper Virus (CDV). The Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) scientists in Bareilly found CDV in the blood samples of dead animals.

image The disease has been found in the dead bodies of the animals of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, Patna Zoo and many areas of West Bengal and Darjeeling.

About Canine distemper Virus

• CDV is a common disease in domestic dogs.

• CDV affects different systems of the body including nervous and respiratory system in these animals.

• CDV breaks down the immunity system and causes various secondary bacterial infections, which leads to death.

• It spreads in the animals that eat dogs infected with the virus and/or drink water from same source.
