A high-level forum Acting on the Call: Ending Preventable Child and Maternal Deaths was held in Washington on 25 June 2014.

A high-level forum Acting on the Call: Ending Preventable Child and Maternal Deaths was held in Washington on 25 June 2014. The forum was organised by US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Governments of India and Ethiopia in collaboration with UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other partners.

During the forum the organizers unveiled new efforts to save an unprecedented number of women and children by 2020 in 24 priority countries. It also announced adoption of bold reforms to improve effectiveness and efficiency at USAID.

India was represented by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and he claimed that India hopes to end preventable child and maternal deaths by 2035. During the forum, he said that to reach the goal, there is an urgent requirement to invest more in girl child education.

He also highlighted six key actions to accelerate and achieve the goal and they were

  • Power of belief
  • Partnership
  • Evidence
  • Communication and gender equality
  • Untapped power in health financing and organization

The forum Acting on the Call was for the first time held in 2012.
